青藏鐵路開通以來,“高原反應”一度被國外媒體熱炒,甚至有報道說,已有多名旅客因發生嚴重高原反應而死亡。對此,鐵道部新聞發言人王勇平表示,截至8月29日,僅發生一例旅客因高原反應誘發心臟病死亡事件。

由報道可知,“高原反應”比較地道的英文表達是“altitude sickness”。“高”指的是altitude(高海拔),所以,下次若看到“高(山)、高(地)、高(原)”,可以依據具體語境想一想能否用“altitude”,如:mountain altitudes(高山地帶);At some altitudes snow never melts.(在某些高海拔地區,雪從不融化。)
“反應”在此也不能照字面直譯為“response”,它著重強調的是“(因高海拔而引起的)不適和惡心”,所以,sickness比較恰切地道出了“(高原)反應”的內涵。
另外,順便提一個與altitude相關的短語,若看到“in his altitude”可是指“某人醉了”,或“飄飄然了”。
