歐盟和亞洲國家呼吁釋放昂山素季 (EU and Asian Nations Call for Release of Aung San Suu Kyi)

歐盟以及亞洲國家敦促緬甸軍隊領導人釋放反對派領導人昂山素季并實施民主改革。來自歐盟和亞洲國家的40多名外長星期二在德國漢堡舉行亞歐會談結束時簽署了一份聯合宣言。

緬甸外長奈溫出席了這次會談。奈溫為他的政府延長昂山素季軟禁的決定進行了辯護。他爭辯說， 釋放這位現年61歲的民主派領導人可能會激發政治不穩定。

在過去17年里，昂山素季大部分時間都以某種形式被拘禁。上星期晚些時候，緬甸官員又把對她的軟禁延長了一年。

昂山素季領導的全國民主聯盟贏得了1990年的全國大選，但是軍方領導人拒絕讓這個黨執政。

European Union and Asian nations are urging Burma's military leaders to release opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi and to implement democratic reforms. More than 40 foreign ministers from European and Asian countries signed a joint declaration Tuesday at the conclusion of Asia-Europe Meeting talks in Hamburg, Germany.

Burma's Foreign Minister Nyan Win attended the meeting. Win defended his government's decision to extend its detention of Aung San Suu Kyi, and he argued that the 61-year-old democracy leader's release could fuel political instability.

Aung San Suu Kyi has spent most of the past 17 years in detention of some form. Late last week, Burmese officials extended her house arrest for another year.

Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy won a general election in 1990, but military leaders have refused to let the party take office.
